Ubuntu 9.10 Released
Written by Timothy Stewart
Ubuntu 9.10 was released on Thursday October 29th. This is one of the most popular Linux distribution on the planet, and for a good reason. Ubuntu promises many things, but mainly to distribute a free operating system, that is timely, secure, and simple.
This is the next release in their promise to release a new version every 6 months. (The last release was 9.04) The releases follow the year and month of release. Fore example Ubuntu 9.10 is the 2009 release in October.
I have been using Ubuntu server for almost 4 years now. I have tried both the desktop and server version but have stuck with the server distribution. It has been running this very web site. I have not experienced any security or stability issues with Ubuntu server. It just works. I use it along with MySQL, Apache2, and Joomla to power this website. If you are looking for a free/secure server for hosting files or websites, Ubuntu Server is a great choice. Be warned though, Linux is not for the beginner. Ubuntu Server is a command line based operating system without an GUI at all. There are many resources available at ubuntu.org and a huge community to support you if you choose to use Ubuntu.
